Disney World’s Skyliner gondola closed after apparent malfunction strands riders for hours

Disney World’s new Skyliner gondola has been closed after an apparent malfunction stranded riders for hours late Saturday night, witnesses reported.

It was “unexpected downtime” on the Skyliner, according to a Disney World spokeswoman who added there were no injuries in the incident.

“One of the three Disney Skyliner routes experienced an unexpected downtime Saturday evening,” a  press release said. “As a result, the  Skyliner will be closed while we look into the details surrounding the downtime.”

Gondola riders began to be evacuated just after 11 pm, according to reports and Disney said it’s working with guests individually “regarding impacts to their visit with us.”

Disney officials gave one man four all-day park passes and a $200 gift card over the matter, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Reedy Creek officials were on scene, along with rescue personnel as several gondolas reportedly smashed together though it’s unknown if riders were on those units.

Skyliner, opened just a week ago with its brightly colored capsules, is designed to bring together    Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios with four Disney World resorts.
