Chinese City of Shijiazhuang Locks Down Due to Spike in COVID-19 Infections

Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei, enters lockdown after more than 100 infections in the area were confirmed.

Provincial authorities had reported 20 new confirmed cases, as well as 43 asymptomatic cases after 54 were already reported.

There are now 117 cases within the city while authorities are looking for more possible clusters.

According to health authorities,  most of the patients went to village events, including a wedding in Shijiazhuang, in the past three weeks.

The current cluster in Hebei was first detected last Sunday when one case was reported in Xingtai city, just adjacent to Shijiazhuang and mass testings were launched.

The cases in Hebei are the first locally transmitted infections since June while Chinese authorities expect case numbers to rise.

Highways leading into the city of Shijiazhuang have been closed while bus terminals and train stations were closed to prevent the virus from spreading outside.

The village of Xiaoguozhuang has been classified as a “high risk” district and sealed off from any outside contact.

“Right now, Hebei faces a serious situation to get the pandemic under control and our responsibilities are heavy,” said Ma Xiaowei, director of the National Health Commission.
