Iran Boosts Uranium Enrichment Amid Increased US Tensions

Iran has resumed its uranium enrichment to 20% in its underground nuclear facility at Fordo, amid increasing tensions with the US in the final days of the Trump administration.

Iran Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said, “We resumed 20% enrichment, as legislated by our Parliament. IAEA has been duly notified. Our remedial action conforms fully with Para 36 of JCPOA, after years of non-compliance by several other JCPOA participants. Our measures are fully reversible upon FULL compliance by ALL,” in a tweet on Monday.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has acknowledged the move.

The uranium enrichment program is now a step away from being at weapons-grade levels, prompting concerns from the international community including Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu said that the move “cannot be explained in any way other than the further realization of its plans to develop a military nuclear program.”

The prime minister also said, “Israel will not allow Iran to produce nuclear weapons.”
