Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has tested positive for COVID-19 but has not shown any symptoms, his office announced in a statement on Jan. 11.

The 72-year-old president, who is running for a second term, was scheduled for a major presidential debate and a presentation session with health experts in Lisbon to discuss the planned lockdown scheduled for announcement on Jan. 13.

According to his office, he has already canceled his entire agenda for the next few days.

The statement also said that de Sousa will be in self-quarantine at his official residential area in the capital and has informed Prime Minister Antonio Costa and Health Minister Marta Temido of his condition.

His positive result comes nearly a week after testing negative when he came into contact with someone who had COVID-19. At that time, his office said that he will not undergo self-quarantine because the exposure was considered low risk.

According to data from Johns Hopkins University, Portugal has recorded a total of 483,689 cases of COVID-19 and 7,803 deaths.
